A new interactive program reveals the spectacular light show you'd see if you dared to wander close to a black hole. It demonstrates how the extreme gravity of a black hole could appear to shred background constellations of stars, spinning them around as though in a giant black washing machine.
The program's creators say it could be an excellent tool to familiarise people with the weird ways that black holes warp light. "It's useful for people to play around with the parameters to study how, for instance, a black hole would distort the constellation Orion," says Thomas Müller of the University of Stuttgart in Germany.

How the director has taken 3D film technology to the next level in his new blockbuster
James Cameron
In real life, we see images in three dimensions because our left and right eyes see slightly different images that, when combined by the brain, deliver a picture that has depth. In old-fashioned 3D cinematography – the sort where your glasses had red and green coloured lenses – a pair of closely-aligned images with different tints gave the impression of depth by fooling the eyes. But modern 3D films have developed new techniques to drag them out of their B-movie past, and Avatar takes things a step further by using both computer generated imagery and advanced stereoscopic filming methods to create the illusion of reality.

The mobile industry all over the world is going to be credited with the fourth generation mobile phone... but not quite in the near future. The rat race of launching this mobile phone is gaining speed. Till date, the 3G mobile phones like BlackBerry Bold and Apple’s iPhone that used third-generation networks for faster Web browsing and e-mail were in demand but this time the companies are yearning to take a step forward. But due to the ongoing crisis, that has gripped the world, the techno savvy will have to wait some time before this technological evolution reaches into their hands.
Altair Nanotechnologies Inc. (Altairnano) of Reno, Nevada, has invented and developed a nano-structured negative electrode material called nano Lithium Titanium Oxide (nLTO) that replaces the graphite used in "standard" Li-ion batteries with safe nanomaterials.
Altairnano performed "hot box" exercises on its batteries at temperatures up to 240°C - more than 100°C above the temperature where graphite-based batteries can explode - with zero explosions or safety concerns. In addition, high-rate overcharge, puncture, crush, drop and other comparative tests were also performed alongside a wide range of graphite-based battery cells with no malfunctions, explosions or safety concerns exhibited by the nLTO cells. Put to the same tests, the graphite cells routinely smoked, caught fire and exploded.
